Phosphate coating is done as a pre-treatment to increase corrosion protection. Most phosphate coatings prepare the surface for further coating; this is done with excellent adhesion and electric isolation.

During phosphating, a steel surface is converted to iron phosphate. The layer of phosphate coating typically includes iron, zinc, or manganese crystals. The phosphate layer is porous and absorbent making it suitable as a conversion layer for powder coating without further treatment.
